Union County Sheriff's Office

The Union County Sheriff's Office handles warrant service for the entire county. The office has six divisions: Administrative, Communications, Court Services, Investigations, Patrol, and Support. The Court Services division deals directly with warrants and other court orders. Call them at (937) 645-4110 or fax (937) 645-4171. For emergencies, dial 911.

In Ohio, the sheriff is the only elected law enforcement officer. That makes the office accountable to voters in a way that appointed police chiefs are not. When a judge signs a warrant, the sheriff's team enters it into LEADS right away. From that point, any officer in the state can see it. The eWarrants system backs this up by linking all 88 counties together in one electronic network.

You can call the sheriff to ask about a warrant. Give them a full name and date of birth. They will check LEADS and let you know if anything comes up. Walk-in requests are also accepted during normal hours. The sheriff does not currently post a warrant list online, so calling or visiting is the way to go for active warrant checks.

Clerk of Courts Records

The Union County Clerk of Courts maintains all case files from the Common Pleas Court. Warrants tied to criminal cases show up in the case docket. You can search for records online or visit the office in Marysville. The Clerk provides public access to case records and warrant status through their website.

When you search by name or case number, the docket entries will show any warrants that were filed. This includes arrest warrants, bench warrants, and capias warrants. Copies of records cost a small fee. If you need a certified copy, let the staff know so they can stamp it properly. The Clerk's office is open Monday through Friday during normal business hours.

The Marysville Municipal Court handles misdemeanor cases and traffic violations for the county. This court also issues warrants, mainly for failure to appear and unpaid fines. Warrant records from the municipal court go through its own case management system, so you may need to check with that court separately if your search does not turn up results in the Common Pleas records.

You have several options for looking up warrants in Union County.

The Clerk of Courts website has a search tool. Use a last name to pull up matching cases and then look through the docket entries. If a warrant was part of the case, it will be listed there. This is free and available online. For active warrants, call the sheriff at (937) 645-4110. They can run a quick check in LEADS. If you want to do a statewide search, the Ohio Department of Public Safety offers BCI background checks for about $22.

Another useful tool is the ODRC offender search. This free database shows records for anyone who has been in the Ohio prison system. If someone was convicted in Union County and sent to state prison, their record will show up here. It won't list active warrants, but it can help you track down case history and conviction details.

Warrant Types Under Ohio Law

Union County courts issue three main types of warrants.

Arrest warrants are based on probable cause. Under ORC 2935, someone files a complaint with the court, and the judge decides if there are enough facts to support an arrest. If so, the warrant goes out to the sheriff for service. These warrants do not expire until they are served or the court recalls them.

Bench warrants get issued when a person fails to show up for court, does not pay a fine, or breaks the rules of probation. The judge can issue one from the bench without a police complaint. These are very common in Union County and across Ohio. If you think you might have a bench warrant, calling the court to ask about it is a smart first step. Sometimes you can set a new hearing date and avoid getting arrested on the warrant.

Search warrants fall under ORC 2933. Police need to show a judge that evidence of a crime is at a specific location. The warrant must be served within a limited time. After the search, the officer files a return with the court.

Public Records and Access Rights

ORC 149.43 gives the public a strong right to access government records in Ohio. You can ask for warrant records without stating a reason. You don't need to provide your identity. The office holding the records must respond promptly and make copies available at a reasonable cost.

Not every record is available though. Unserved warrants may be withheld if disclosure would interfere with law enforcement. Juvenile records and sealed cases are also exempt. But most adult warrant records are public once they have been filed with the court. If an office denies your request and you think the denial is wrong, you can file a complaint with the Ohio Court of Claims.
