How to Search Lorain County Warrants
Lorain County offers better online access than many Ohio counties. The Clerk of Courts runs a case management system that is available around the clock. This online portal has court records going back to 1988. You can search by party name or case number to find warrant-related filings.
The online system includes several useful features. Court calendars show daily schedules for all judges and magistrates. The Quick Index gives you an alphabetical list of all cases by party name. Docket sheets show every filing in a case in order. If a bench warrant was issued in a case, it will show up in the docket. You can search criminal cases, civil cases, domestic relations matters, and 9th District Court of Appeals cases through this one portal. The system is free to use.

For a direct warrant check, the Sheriff's Office is still the best option. Call the Records Division or go in person. The Clerk's online system shows court case activity but may not list every active warrant the same way the Sheriff's internal database does. Using both sources gives you the most complete picture.
Under ORC Section 149.43, warrant records in Ohio are public. Anyone can request them. You do not need to explain why you want the information.
Note: Warrant searches that require identifying information like a Social Security Number are only done in person at the Sheriff's Office.
Warrant Types in Lorain County
Lorain County courts issue several kinds of warrants. Understanding the difference helps you know what to expect when searching records.
Arrest warrants come from a judge after reviewing evidence of a crime. Under ORC Chapter 2935, law enforcement must show probable cause. The Lorain County Common Pleas Court issues felony arrest warrants. These are for serious crimes like assault, theft over a certain amount, drug trafficking, and other offenses. The warrant names the person and the charge. It stays active until the person is arrested or the court cancels it.
Bench warrants are issued when someone fails to appear in court. Both the Elyria Municipal Court and the Lorain Municipal Court issue bench warrants regularly. Miss a hearing, skip a sentencing date, or fail to report for probation, and the judge can issue a bench warrant immediately. These warrants go into LEADS right away.
Search warrants authorize law enforcement to search a specific location under ORC Chapter 2933. A judge must approve each one. The warrant must describe exactly where officers can search and what they are looking for. After a search warrant is executed, the return and inventory become public record.
