Lake County Overview
Lake County Sheriff's Office
The Lake County Sheriff's Office runs a large operation with multiple divisions. These include the Road Patrol, Detective Bureau, Corrections Division, Court Services, Central Communications, Marine Patrol, and SWAT. The office also manages the Sex Offenders Registry and a Community Liaison program. All of these divisions play a role in warrant service and law enforcement across the county.
The Court Services Division works directly with the courts on warrant processing. Deputies serve arrest warrants, bench warrants, and protection orders. The Detective Bureau investigates serious crimes that often result in arrest warrants. The SWAT team handles high-risk warrant service for dangerous situations. The Road Patrol picks up people on warrants during routine stops and calls for service.
Call 440-350-5620 to reach the Sheriff's Office about a warrant. Staff can check the LEADS system and tell you if there is an active warrant for a particular person.
Most Wanted and Warrant Searches
The Sheriff's most wanted page is one of the best public warrant resources in northeast Ohio. It shows photos of wanted individuals along with their descriptions, dates of birth, last known addresses, and charges. Recent entries have included people wanted for possession of drugs, breaking and entering, carrying concealed weapons, aggravated trafficking, identity fraud, and theft from protected persons.
If you have information about someone on the most wanted list, contact the Sheriff at 440-350-5620 or the tip line at 1-800-899-5253 extension 5620. The Sheriff's Office warns people never to try to pick up a fugitive on their own. Just call in the tip and let law enforcement handle it.
The Sheriff's Office also publishes a jail roster in PDF format. This shows current inmates and their charges. If someone was just arrested on a warrant, their name will be on this list. You may need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the file.
The Lake County Clerk of Courts provides court case searches for civil and criminal cases. You can check case records and warrant documentation through the court system. Public records requests are also processed through this office. Under ORC Section 149.43, most court records are available to the public.
Types of Warrants
Arrest warrants in Lake County follow ORC Chapter 2935. A complaint is filed, a judge finds probable cause, and the warrant is signed. The Sheriff serves it. Felony arrest warrants come from the Common Pleas Court. Misdemeanor arrest warrants are issued by one of the three municipal courts depending on where the offense happened.
Bench warrants make up a big share of the outstanding warrants in the county. Three separate municipal courts means three sources of bench warrants for missed hearings and unpaid fines. The Mentor Municipal Court, Painesville Municipal Court, and Willoughby Municipal Court all issue their own bench warrants. These do not expire. An old bench warrant can turn up during a routine traffic stop years later.
Search warrants are authorized under ORC Chapter 2933. Officers describe the location and items they seek, and a judge signs off. The Detective Bureau and SWAT team use search warrants in drug and violent crime investigations. These warrants remain sealed until the case closes.
Note: The most wanted list focuses on people with serious charges. Many more warrants exist beyond what appears on that list.

The Painesville Municipal Court covers the central area around the county seat. The Willoughby Municipal Court handles the western part.
